Free Pack Friday Week 2: RnB and Melodic Hip-Hop Free Samples
This week's free pack roundup focuses on the melodic side of hip-hop. Rhodes loops, guitar samples, vocal chops, and drum kits for modern RnB production.
Modern RnB and melodic hip-hop rely on very different source material than trap. Where trap is drum-forward, RnB lives in the harmonic content — chord progressions on Rhodes, guitar loops, silky vocal chops, and 808s tuned to complement rather than dominate. This week's Free Pack Friday roundup focuses on that melodic ecosystem.
1. Splice Free RnB Content
Splice's free tier RnB section tends to have some of the strongest content in the whole free rotation. Rhodes loops, chord progressions, and guitar riffs at usable tempos. The RnB curation team seems to prioritize this genre for free content.
Get it: splice.com/plans (free tier)
Why it's worth it: Modern melodic content from professional producers. Ready to drop into a beat.
2. LABS by Spitfire Audio — Soft Piano and Electric Piano
LABS is Spitfire Audio's free instrument plugin. The Soft Piano and Electric Piano libraries are professionally recorded and completely free. For melodic hip-hop and RnB, these two instruments alone could be the melodic foundation of your entire beat.
Get it: labs.spitfireaudio.com
Why it's worth it: Studio-recorded piano and Rhodes-style electric piano at zero cost. Better sound than most paid libraries in this price range.
3. Cymatics Free RnB Vocal Chops
Cymatics periodically releases free vocal chop packs, and their RnB-focused drops are consistently high quality. Female vocal phrases, silky ad-libs, and processed vocal textures.
Get it: cymatics.fm/pages/free-samples (rotating content)
Why it's worth it: Vocal content is the hardest to source for free. Cymatics free vocal packs fill a real gap.
4. 99Sounds Free Rhodes and Electric Piano
99Sounds' library includes free Rhodes and Wurlitzer sample packs from various contributors. Vintage electric piano character that fits perfectly in RnB and lo-fi production.
Get it: 99sounds.org
Why it's worth it: Vintage-flavored electric piano samples that add warmth. Real recorded content rather than digital emulations.
5. Native Instruments Komplete Start — Kontakt Factory Content
Komplete Start includes reduced-content versions of several Native Instruments instruments, plus Kontakt Player. Inside Kontakt Player you can run various free third-party libraries, some of which include Rhodes emulations and vintage keys.
Get it: native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-start/
Why it's worth it: Kontakt Player alone unlocks a whole ecosystem of free Kontakt libraries. This is one of the highest-value free downloads in music production.
The RnB Production Workflow With Free Samples
RnB production has a distinct workflow that free samples can support well:
Start with the chord progression. Load a Rhodes patch from LABS or Komplete Start. Write four or eight bars of chord progression — typically slow, jazz-influenced changes with extensions (7ths, 9ths, sus chords).
Layer a supporting instrument. Add a guitar loop from Splice free content, or a soft synth pad, or a Wurlitzer patch. Keep it in the background — RnB layering is about depth, not competition.
Add drums that stay out of the way. RnB drums are usually more restrained than trap. Softer 808s, laid-back snares, hi-hat patterns without aggressive rolls. Free packs work well because you probably want the drums to feel organic rather than obviously programmed.
Vocal chops as texture. Chop up a free vocal sample and use it as an atmospheric element rather than a hook. Pitch it, reverse it, add reverb, place it low in the mix.
Mix wider than you think. RnB benefits from a wide stereo image on the melodic elements. Free reverb like Valhalla SuperMassive can widen the field without expensive plugins.
The Sample Discovery Habit
The best producers accumulate sample libraries over years. Every free pack this Friday roundup covers adds to that library. Six months from now, you will have processed and re-used these samples in ways that make them uniquely yours.
The discipline: download it Friday, categorize it in a folder that makes sense to you, and use at least one sample from this week's roundup in a beat by Sunday. Make it a habit and your library becomes your fingerprint.
Next Week
Free Pack Friday Week 3 covers house, techno, and EDM. Synth loops, hard-hitting drums, and analog-modeled bass content for electronic producers.
