The History of Rap Music

Rap music originated in the late 1970s in the United States. It began as a way for African American and Latino youth to express themselves. It was heavily influenced by the Jamaican tradition of toasting and was a form of musical expression that was often used to tell stories about life in the inner city.
Early rap music was mainly recorded in New York City, and some of the first rap songs to become popular were “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang and “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. As rap music gained popularity, new styles and subgenres began to emerge. These included gangsta rap, which was characterized by lyrics that often dealt with violence, drugs, and other aspects of inner-city life, as well as more positive styles such as conscious rap and alternative rap.
Rap music continued to grow in popularity throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with artists such as Public Enemy, N.W.A., and Tupac Shakur becoming household names. In the 2000s, rap music experienced a resurgence in popularity, and artists such as Eminem and 50 Cent became some of the biggest names in music. Today, rap music is one of the most popular forms of music ever!
