The MPC has a special place in hip-hop production history. From the SP-1200 through the MPC60, MPC2000XL, MPC1000, and now the MPC Live II and MPC X, this line of samplers defined the sound of an entire era of hip-hop. Understanding which MPC product fits your workflow — hardware, controller, or software — is one of the more important decisions for a beat-focused producer.

What an MPC Actually Is

An MPC is a sampler with pads. You load samples onto the pads, program patterns by tapping the pads in time, and arrange the patterns into songs. Picking the Right Entry Point

If you have never used an MPC workflow before: install MPC Beats. It is free. Spend a month producing beats in it. If you love the workflow, upgrade to an MPC controller or standalone hardware. If you find it awkward, you saved a thousand dollars.

Other producers do not care about the lineage and would rather have modern computer-based flexibility. That is also valid.

Neither approach is objectively correct. Pick the one that makes you want to sit down and produce.
