How to Mix Your First Beat: A Complete Producer's Guide
Mixing feels intimidating because it involves dozens of decisions with no obvious right answer. Here is a systematic first-time mixing workflow that produces professional results.
Mixing is where most bedroom producers hit a wall. The beat sounds good in isolation. The individual elements sound good in isolation. But putting them together into a mix that competes with commercial releases feels like a completely different skill. Because it is. Here is a systematic first-time mixing workflow that produces professional results without requiring years of experience.
The Mental Framework
Mixing is not about making things sound "good." Mixing is about giving every element the space it needs to be heard clearly. A great mix is one where every part of the beat serves the whole and nothing fights for attention it does not deserve.
Approach mixing with a hierarchy in mind. Some elements are more important than others. Vocals in a rap track matter more than the hi-hats. The kick and 808 matter more than a background pad. Every mixing decision should prioritize the important elements at the expense of the less important ones.
Step 1: Gain Staging Before Anything Else
Before touching an EQ, compressor, or effect, set the volume levels of your tracks so they hit reasonable levels. This is called gain staging.
Aim for each track's peak level to hit around -12 dB to -6 dB when playing. Anything hitting 0 dB is clipping. Anything peaking below -18 dB is too quiet and will need excessive boost later.
Adjust track faders down, not up. Starting with faders at 0 dB and lowering as needed produces cleaner mixes than starting quiet and boosting up. Digital plugins operate best with plenty of headroom.
Solo each track and check. Play the beat and listen to each element in isolation. Adjust levels so nothing peaks near 0 dB, nothing is inaudibly quiet, and nothing needs radical boost or cut.
Gain staging alone can transform a muddy beat into a clear one before any EQ or compression touches the signal.
Step 2: EQ Subtractively, Not Additively
The single biggest mixing mistake is boosting frequencies rather than cutting them. When two elements clash in the same frequency range, most beginners boost one to push it forward. The professional approach is to cut the other one to create space.
Load a free EQ like TDR Nova on every track. Then:
Cut low frequencies from anything that is not bass. Most elements have inaudible sub-bass content that muddies the mix. High-pass filter melodic elements at 80-150 Hz, hi-hats at 300-500 Hz. This immediately cleans up the low end and gives your bass and kick room to work.
Cut competing frequencies. If your kick and 808 fight in the 60-80 Hz range, cut a bit from one to let the other dominate. If your snare and vocals both crowd 3-5 kHz, cut the snare's presence to let the vocal shine.
Boost only for character, not correction. If you feel the need to boost something, ask whether the problem is really that the element is too quiet in the mix, or whether other elements are covering it up. Boost is a last resort.
Step 3: Compression for Consistency, Not Loudness
Compression reduces the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a sound. This makes elements sit more consistently in the mix without wild volume changes.
Kick and snare: compress with a fast attack (1-3 ms) and fast release (30-80 ms). Ratio around 4:1. Reduce peaks by 3-6 dB.
Bass and 808s: compress with a medium attack (10-30 ms) and slow release (100-300 ms). Ratio around 3:1. This tightens the bass without killing punch.
Vocals: compress with a fast attack (1-5 ms) and medium release (50-150 ms). Ratio around 3:1 to 4:1. Reduce peaks by 3-6 dB.
Group busses: subtle compression, 2:1 ratio, gentle reduction of 1-2 dB. This glues elements together without squashing them.
If your compression is producing more than 6 dB of gain reduction on any single element, you are compressing too hard. Back off.
Step 4: Reverb and Delay for Depth
Reverb and delay create the sense of space in a mix. Different elements should live in different acoustic spaces.
Kick and 808: minimal or no reverb. These need to feel tight and present.
Snare: short plate reverb or room reverb. 1-2 second decay. Adds body without pushing the snare to the back.
Hi-hats and percussion: very short reverb or none. Overly reverberant hats sound cluttered.
Melodic elements: longer reverb tails to add space. 2-3 second decay for pads, 1-2 seconds for lead synths.
Vocals: slap delay (short quick echo) plus subtle plate reverb. Modern hip-hop vocals often have surprisingly little reverb.
Use send tracks with reverb plugins rather than inserting reverb on each track. This lets you dial in one reverb sound and share it across multiple elements, creating a coherent acoustic space.
Step 5: Panning for Width
Mixing everything in the center creates a claustrophobic sound. Panning elements slightly left or right creates width and separation.
Kick, 808, bass, and lead vocals: center. These are the foundation of the mix.
Snare and clap: slightly off-center or center depending on preference.
Hi-hats and percussion: panned 20-40% left or right. Different percussion elements panned differently creates a wide percussion field.
Backing melodies and pads: panned wider, 40-60% left/right.
Vocal ad-libs and doubles: panned to opposite sides of the main vocal.
Avoid extreme panning (90-100%) except for specific ear-catching effects. Most panning should be subtle.
Step 6: Reference, Reference, Reference
The most valuable mixing habit is comparing your mix to professional releases in the same genre. Load a commercial reference track next to your mix on separate stereo tracks. Toggle between them frequently.
Match perceived loudness first. Adjust reference track volume so it feels about as loud as your mix, then compare. Louder mixes always sound better in immediate comparison, so equal-loudness comparison is essential.
Compare low end specifically. Is your bass and kick pushing similarly hard? If not, why?
Compare vocal clarity. Is the vocal sitting in the mix similarly?
Compare stereo width. Is your mix as wide or as focused as the reference?
Do not try to make your mix identical to the reference. Use the reference as a reality check on general mixing quality.
Step 7: Master Bus Processing
Master bus processing should be minimal on a first mix. Beginners often over-process the master bus in an attempt to make their beat sound "finished."
Gentle EQ on the master bus: high-pass filter at 30 Hz to remove sub-rumble, gentle broad EQ boost for clarity if needed.
Master bus compression: ratio 2:1, slow attack and release, 1-2 dB gain reduction. Subtle glue rather than aggressive limiting.
Limiter on the master: as the very last plugin. Free options like TDR Limiter 6 GE work well. Aim for peaks at -1 dB and integrated LUFS around -12 to -9 for streaming platforms.
Never mix into a limiter. Add the limiter last, after the rest of the mix is balanced. Mixing into a limiter distorts your perception of the balance.
Step 8: Check on Multiple Systems
A mix that sounds great on studio monitors might sound terrible on phone speakers. Before considering a mix finished, check it on:
- Studio monitors or good headphones (your primary reference)
- Phone speakers (this is how most listeners will actually hear it)
- Laptop speakers
- Car stereo if possible
- Bluetooth speaker
Each system has different frequency response and stereo imaging. A mix that translates across all systems is a professional mix. A mix that only sounds good on one specific system is not finished.
The Iterative Reality
Your first mix will not be professional-sounding. Neither will your tenth. Mixing is a skill that improves gradually over hundreds of mixes.
